The Passing Of A Friend & Drummer – Rest In Peace, Dylan.

BOMF! has always had a revolving door when it came to drummers. After Dynachrome ended its brief stint as a practice band, BOMF! was formed and enlisted the help of Garcia to play drums. As a precursor to moving to Sacramento (Sacramental), Garcia quit and BOMF! convinced Dynachrome drummer, Tym, to move with them to California. After a few short months of practicing in Sac-O-Tomatoes, the boys then dumped Tym and recruited Marshall to play drums. A return to Portland in 1995 meant a new drummer, and they found what they needed in Drew Scarymore. Unfortunately, that was short lived and BOMF! added Stevie to pick up where Drew left off. After a three and a half week tour around These United States in 1997, BOMF! encouraged Jim from Redding, CA, punk rock band 3 Out Of 4 to move north and play drums for them. Jim moved on and left BOMF! with an empty drum stool.

Enter Dylan. Dylan came with the reputation of solid drumming and incessant snarkiness, which was exactly what BOMF! needed. Dylan had played in a number of bands before taking the rhythm reigns of BOMF!, and he continued playing in bands while simultaneously playing with us. Dylan was the type of guy that could be counted on for a snarky reply and a smile, and while he could be as negative about things as the next guy, he always tempered that with a measure of charm and ever underlying humor.

Even though BOMF! was nearing the end of their first run, Dylan was always happy to play and was our first drummer to keep the promise that “he was going to play (that) show naked”. For many a show, Dylan’s drum stool ended the night with his hairy bare ass sweat all over it, and on too many occasions, the other three guys in BOMF! saw his junk proudly displayed from behind the drumkit. He also drummed on the last recording we did before the big hiatus, a cover of “What’s This Shit Called Love” for a tribute album to punk legends The Meatmen.

After BOMF! called it quits in 1999, Dylan remained a friend to all of the band members. Dylan could often be seen on one of his three cylinder late 1970’s Yamaha motorcycles or at a local show with a beer in hand. When BOMF! reunited for a few shows in 2007-2009, Dylan offered to retain his seat as our drummer. While the rest of the band struggled to remember 15 year old songs, Dylan picked right up where we had left off as though we had taken no off time at all.

Dylan eventually moved back to California and was not available when BOMF! reunited again in 2016, but he still remained a friend to Brent, Scotty and Lyle. Dylan passed away on April 11, 2017, after an accidental overdose of painkillers and alcohol. Although he is gone, he will never be forgotten. The world is a slightly darker place without Dylan Richter Skiles. He left behind a lot of love and a legacy filled with snark and humor.

Rest in peace, my friend.

  1. Dylan dated my sister a long time ago and he was the only guy I actually approved of. What a huge loss. Sincere regrets and sympathies for those who remained close to him and are still grieving.

  2. Dylan was one of my best friends and my daughters father. This world isn’t the same with his belly-aching humor, wit and, endless heart I was always so proud of him and I miss him so. This lose cuts out a place that I will put back once I meet him again… Dylan, we love you!

    1. Hey Angela. I’m Steven. I was a friend of Dylan’s. I was one of his gay friends. I lost track of him and was watching Purple Rain and thought of him, so I decided to try and look him up. I just thought he went back to San Francisco. My condolences! He always spoke well of you. I’m truly broken hearted.

  3. Was just thinking about Dylan today, he pops into my head every so often. We were roommates in Portland for a while in the late 90s… he was a really good guy and made me laugh often. We shared the experience of flipping a soapbox car together on Mt Tabor when Dylan was at the wheel, afterwards he no longer wanted to be the driver and I agreed. Thanks for the nice words about him.

  4. I’m an old friend of Dylan’s. I lost track of him and wondered if had went back to CA. I was watching Purple Rain and thought I’d try and look him up. I’ve never had a cell phone before the pandemic. My name is Steven and his super gay friend and have made out with Daniel on New Years Eve! Lol. I’m truly broken hearted!

  5. Years later. I’m glad we can share sone thoughts. My name is Ryan Nordine and Dylan was a close friend of mine in high school and then, after a short stint at the community college near where we grew up, he headed up to Eugene (where I was attending school) and began his new life in Oregon.
if you called Dylan ( landline style) when we were in high school, his parents or sister might pick up. They would trudge down the hall and as the phone became closer to his closed door you would hear the drums and cymbals and, maybe a little communicative yelling and then we would speak. Dylan changed his bass drum Pearl set to Peart and turned me on to Rush. He was even a deadhead at a certain point ( I still am ) -maybe he secretly or openly was later and would point out the few times ( or the tine -sad) I saw him late in his life. That he would remark to people about this. To their shock and dismay?! Pretty sure he was a punk rock dude : ethos guy. But could play anything. Dylan was special and I miss him. I wish I could talk with him about many things. He came from a good family. It’s been a long time but I will always remember Dylan Skiles. And the folks that knew him well in his early years will too. “Scooter” was his nickname. he drove a vw camper , an “83? Accord hatchback and later we all saw when the “ durward mobile “, a car that was his dad’s , this the name , came to an end- I believe on the west side of the Sam Mateo bridge – and he captured the moment for all to see and posted it. Too bad I was so much dumber and unaware in my youth. Others could share countless stories about Dylan from his early years on. And don’t give Dylan shit on a high school morning if he hadn’t had coffee. Haha. Coffee in high school was not on my menu. Haha. I envy his parents’ houses location and the treks Dylan would take out into the surrounding open spaces. He and his father would travel out to camp in the desert and do what they were doing. Look up his dad , a smart and accomplished man. We love Dylan we miss Dylan
