BOMF! was founded in Portland, OR, in February 1993. From the failed ashes of a concept band called Dynachrome, Brent (Burnt Carnage) and Lyle (Liable More Than Likable) decided to play their own brand of punk rock. Within a few days, they added Mike (Mic Hole) to the mix for more vocals and lead guitar duties, and with the help of friends Witch Throttlegush & The Green Devils, they cornered Chris (Garcia) to play drums. The boys spent a scant few weeks throwing together some originals and some covers in hopes to get a demo out and start playing some shows.
The no-life-having lads’ big break came on a Saturday night when, while practicing at The Palace (practice spaces in an old town PDX warehouse), the on-site superintendent got a call from Bruno (band-booker extraordinaire) at The Satyricon looking for a band to close out a show that night. Being that the boys were the only people in The Palace that had nothing better to do than practice, they jumped at the opportunity. The Satyricon was punk rock famous, on the level of CBGB’s in NYC, but instead in the ever grey and rainy Pacific Northwest, and to get a show on a Saturday night for an unheard of band was a rare opportunity.
BOMF! loaded their gear into their collection of cars and trekked the few blocks over to The Satryricon to load in. The building was packed and the boys were elated! Local Portland speed rockers 90 Proof were headlining and Satyricon was packed to capacity. As 90 Proof finished up their set, BOMF! took the stage and with their patented “Hi, everybody, we’re BOMF!” the set in to play some punk rock. Within the first two songs, the room was cleared and only a few drunks and some friends remained to witness BOMF! insult everyone in the room both sonically and verbally.
While most people may not consider room clearing as part of a resume, it was exactly what the boys expected, and they were ok with that; after all, Rome wasn’t vandalized in a day. What BOMF! did get, however, was the opportunity to prove to Bruno that they could get up on stage and play some music. They were rewarded with the promise to get added to the calendar and soon thereafter, BOMF! started booking shows. The rest, they say, is history.
